In 2019, SANQC participated in the Knock-out Interest Campaign led by the British Columbia Federation of Students to make education in Canada more affordable for students. Last week the federal government announced that the interest on federal student loans will be eliminated in April 2023, saving students an average of $410/ year.
“The elimination of interest on student loans is a monumental achievement. It shows that advocacy works, and that students, when we push together, can achieve great things for our future,” said Alvaro Garcia, SANQC Councilor. “This highlights the value of the work we have been doing for years at SANQC together with other student organizations.”
While there is still more advocacy work to do, including more support for both International and Indigenous learners, this demonstrates we are heading in the right direction, towards more affordable education.
